NATIONAL FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCENovember 13-15, 2009 — Denver, Colorado During the weekend of November 13th - 15th PBL members from the University of North Dakota and Jamestown College represented the state of North Dakota at the FBLA-PBL National Fall Leadership Conference (NFLC) in Denver, Colorado. Unlike the State and National Leadership Conferences the focus of the NFLC is on workshops, with the goal of fine-tuning leadership skills and networking with students from across the country. The opening keynote speaker on Friday, Eric Chester, is an author of eleven books and Founder and CEO of Bring Your “A” Game to Work. He talked about the seven values he believes will make every employer want to hire you. These values include Accountability, Ambition, and Appreciation. At the end of his presentation he challenged us to take the first step by picking up a free copy of his book to start the three tiered process of developing his seven values. The next day was full of workshops for members to attend, there was a set of workshops specifically geared toward PBL, but PBL members were gladly accepted into the FBLA workshops. All the workshops were great, but there were a few that stuck out. The first was “Do You Have the Guts to be an Entrepreneur?” and “What You MUST Know About Debt and Credit to Thrive in Today’s Economy.” In the first one Renee Krasovec, Recruiting Manager for College Pro first handed out a survey of several questions relating to ourselves and in turn being an entrepreneur. She also discussed the aspects of running a business from business planning to the actual management of the employees and finances. The second, by John Deckys, CEO of VIP Enterprises, was one of, if not the best workshop at the conference. Mr. Deckys talked about one’s credit score, how it’s calculated, and how one can maximize their credit score. It was a great presentation that was full of useful information, that members could bring back into their personal and professional lives alike. The conference came to a close Saturday evening with keynote speaker, Janine Driver, founder, president, and lead instructor for the Body Language Institute. She put on a great presentation on how to present yourself in a professional situation and what you might be portraying through body language without even knowing it. At the end of her presentation she handed all volunteers free tuition to the Body Language Institute in Washington D.C. In addition to the conference members also made use of their free time in Denver. After the conference officially came to a close Saturday night, several PBL members headed to the Pepsi Center for a Colorado Avalanche hockey game, although the home team ended with a loss, it was still a great game. Sunday was a day of packing up everything from the conference, wandering through downtown shops, and relaxing in the hot tub waiting for a shuttle to the airport. Conference attendees returned to North Dakota with a strengthened desire to make North Dakota PBL even better. They have brought back member recruitment ideas from other state chapters, ideas for the State Leadership Conference, and different ways to increase communication across our state. Attendees from North Dakota were: Devin Claus, State President; Holly Kurth, State VP of Finance and Member Development; Carlene Jones, State VP of Communications; Remington Zacher, State VP of Public Relations; Dylan Aaker; Alisa Kosse; Lee Rensch; Saúl Rodriguez; and Josh Thielen.
